Follow the progress of restoring the Brendle House in Rutersville, Texas.
About the Brendle House
The Brendle House is the old original dirt-floor farmhouse that served as the home for the original owner of the property--Mr. W. E. Brendle. No indoor plumbing, although there was a water faucet (no sink!) in the kitchen, and wood-burning stoves in the bedroom and kitchen provided the means for heating and cooking. When E. D. and Myrtle McMurry acquired the property and built their retirement home in 1979, Myrtle insisted that the Brendle house not be torn down.
Fast forward 30 years, and Mike McMurry has inherited the property. The house his parents built burned in 2000, but a little cabin serves as a perfect weekend camp house.
Now it's time to restore the Brendle House. Plumbing and floors will be installed, rotted areas replaced, and the foundation stabilized. As with most all restoration projects, the more you work, the work you find needs to be done! Follow along as the Brendle House gets restored!
Kind of looks innocent enough, but here's the Brendle house BEFORE the restoration work got started. The first two pictures are of the old smokehouse. Just look at the old hand-made tin gingerbread trim!
